Athlete Non-Profits and Programs

The athletes that work with ‘nPlay are all very committed to fighting childhood obesity. Some of the athletes have their own non-profits that work in the areas where they live, play, went to college and grew up. One of our initiatives is to support their work. We hope you will look at what they are doing and support them.

Paul Pierce

Truth on Health

Boston Celtics captain, nine-time All-Star, and 2008 NBA Champion and Finals MVP Paul “The Truth” Pierce embodies what it means to be a champion – on and off the court. Pierce founded The Truth Fund in 2002 to provide educational and life-enriching opportunities for under-served youth. Later that year, Pierce received the NBA Home Team Community Service Award for his commitment to the Boston community and active role as a national spokesperson for NBA’s Read to Achieve program. Pierce has hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with hundreds of single families, and has hosted celebrity softball games and other events to raise awareness and funds for causes close to his heart. In 2007, Pierce established the Paul Pierce Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Tufts Medical Center and Floating Hospital for Children and he presently sits on the Board of Governors for the hospital. Through his foundation, he has helped to rebuild the basketball court at the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Club and helped completely renovate Richardson Park in downtown LA.

Shannon Miller

Shannon Miller Foundation

The Shannon Miller Foundation is dedicated to fighting childhood obesity. Today, an estimated one third of all children in the United States are overweight, while the occurrence of obesity has more than quadrupled in the last 25 years. This epidemic leads to life threatening issues such as heart disease, asthma, hypertension and type II diabetes. Through education and awareness of the health risks associated with this disease Shannon strives to make a positive impact on children’s health. The Shannon Miller Foundation offers children the opportunity to be physically active, and gain greater nutritional knowledge.

Gary Player

The Player Foundation

In 1983, the Player family established The Player Foundation in order to provide quality education, nutrition, medical care and extra-curricular activities to the less fortunate children living in rural areas of South Africa.  Today, through several annual events staged in the USA, Asia, Europe and South Africa, the foundation has raised over $35 million for impoverished children globally.  The Player Foundation is headquartered in Palm Beach, Florida, and operates as a 501 C (3) non-profit organization.

Gary Player has always felt very strongly that we must look after our youth in order to ensure a positive future.  What thus began as a small vision to educate a handful of children near Mr. Player’s estate outside Johannesburg, South Africa, has now grown to support partner schools, as well as HIV and crime-stricken communities in China.

Each year Black Knight International, in conjunction with the Gary Player Foundation, manages and runs a series of four prestigious golf events on four continents to raise funds for charity – the primary beneficiary being underprivileged children’s education and impoverished communities across the globe.
